Hot Mud: Choosing a Working Time You Can Actually Use
Understand setting compound before the clock starts running.
The number is not your full working time
A bag marked 20, 45, or 90 minutes describes an approximate setting time. Your useful application window can be shorter.
Mix smaller batches first
A manageable batch lets you learn the product without wasting material or racing a pan that is already hardening.
Use clean water and clean tools
Old compound left in the pan or on a knife can speed up the next batch and create hard pieces in the finish.
Do not remix compound that is setting
Adding water after setting begins does not restore the product. Discard it, clean the tools, and mix a fresh batch.
Choose more time than you think you need
Beginners usually get better results with a longer setting time until mixing and application become predictable.
