7 Drywall Repair Mistakes That Show Through Paint
The patching mistakes that become painfully obvious once the paint dries.
1. Using too much mud
Several thin, wide coats are easier to hide than one heavy coat.
2. Rushing between coats
Compound that is still damp can shrink, crack, or pull loose when you sand or recoat it.
3. Not feathering wide enough
Each coat should extend farther than the last. A narrow patch creates a ridge or shadow after painting.
4. Sanding through the drywall paper
Seal fuzzy or torn face paper before adding more compound.
5. Not matching the texture
Practice first on scrap drywall or cardboard, then blend without leaving a halo around the repair.
6. Skipping primer
Joint compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding wall. Primer helps prevent flashing and uneven sheen.
7. Judging only from straight on
Shine a work light across the wall from the side to expose ridges and hollows before painting.
